It’s very hard to say if it’s a “good” idea, because it varies so much family to family, child to child, college to college, and even year to year as maturity changes things! But yes, you can graduate early, or you can start high school early and then do it in four years. Or both.
I can tell you what worked for me. I waited until it was time to graduate my son. Then I arranged the previous 4 years of education and called it “high school.” He had collected some college credits at that time, so he graduated high school at 16 – and he entered the university with Junior year status.

I don’t remember how many high school credits he had, but he had 1 year of homeschooling college with CLEP exams (I think they only counted 45 college credits, but he earned more than that) and he had one year of college by dual enrollment in community college. So he started the university as a junior.
Because the boys were given the full tuition scholarships, they had the freedom to take longer in the university level. Both boys are earning a double major, and both are also hoping to get a minor as well, and it’s taken them 4 years.
I hope that explains it a little. Every family is unique.

OK. When you say he had a year of homeschooling college with CLEP, do you mean he spent one year preparing for “X number” of CLEP exams as his first year of college? He earned 45 credits doing this? Wow! My son wants to CLEP, but we will see how many he wants/is able to do.
