My son has a life-threating allergy to peanuts. He is one of “those” kids. When he was 18 months old, I had to come to grips with the fact that he might, at random, simply stop breathing for no good reason. Last Friday night was one of those times. This photo was taken in the emergency room, with him glowing-tomato red and itching like crazy. It was very scary, but we were prepared with an epi-pen, so I never felt like his life was imminently threatened.
My perfectly healthy older son has been in the hospital three times with a life-threatening condition. All three times I thought I thought he would die. My perfectly healthy, non-allergic son.
The truth is that we ALL can simply stop breathing in the blink of an eye. No one is immune. You just have to seize the day, every day!
Alex’s college application essay was about “emergency room visit number two” when he was 12 years old. While waiting 6 hours to be discharged, he had nothing to do. My husband went out and bought Alex the book “Wealth of Nations” by Adam Smith (Alex’s request, not as punishment.) That book had a tremendous effect on Alex, and really became the point at which he began to study economics and politics in earnest, leading to his chosen career. Reading “Wealth of Nations” isn’t something kids normally do at 12 years old, but it ended up being a great thing for Alex.
Seize the day. Soak it up. Learn what you can, serve how you can. Do good while you can. None of us knows what tomorrow will bring.
