I saw an article in the newspaper about a spectacular summer camp for computer-loving techie kids.
Summer camps have long been part of the American experience for children and teenagers, and for the last 30 years or so, computers and technology have added to the equation. “What we’re trying to do is to take a child’s hobby and show how to turn it into a potential career,” Safran said. “This summer, Karen Katzenberger, 13, of Fall City, plans to take her love of drawing to a new level at DigiPen ProjectFUN with a 3-D animation workshop.”
Learning 3-D animation? Getting experience at DigiPen? What an amazing opportunity!
Most summer camps can fill up early, so now is the best time to start looking for something if your child is interested. It would be impossible for me to list summer camps here, because families have different criteria, and children have different interested. I could point you to some great summer camps for chess in the Seattle Area (Chess4Life.com) but I don’t think that will be a good fit for every student! Instead, a quick google search will help you find the information you need! Now is the time to seek a summer camp if you are interested.
I’ve recently been connecting with homeschooling businesses on LinkedIn. I invite you to send me an invitation if you want to connect with my business.
Here are two notes I received this last week that I thought were so encouraging. I hope you will take their advice and discover how I can help you homeschool high school.
Lee,
Thank you so much for taking the time to compile these resources for me. They are, alternatively, eye-opening, encouraging, and down right exciting. I am seeing a lot of potential avenues to prepare my son for a positive college experience. I’m so glad I followed my instincts and decided to contact you now, while we are in the early stages of our high school years. Your resources have given me a lot more confidence to homeschool a gifted high schooler.
Thank you, too, for your time today, it was a pleasure to speak with you.
~ Sue in Massachusetts
Dear Lee,
So far, Hannah has been accepted to George Fox University with a $10,000 a year scholarship, and we just received news that she’s been accepted to Seattle Pacific University with the Trustees’ Award scholarship for $14,000 a year! We are so excited. Many years ago we committed our little school to God, and look what He has done. A big thank you to you for being used by Him to help enable this to happen, and to many others who have been there along the way.

Looking for a great homeschool high school logic course?
Loreena asked, “What Logic curriculum did you use or would you recommend?”
Introductory Logic by Nance is a wonderful beginning logic course. It has a workbook and set of DVDs. Although I felt incapable of teaching logic to my children, it was easy to provide the video and workbook for them to use. My children did a great job with it!
This program is written from a Christian perspective. I gave my children 1/2 credit for logic with this course. I called it “Logic” and placed it in my “Electives” section of the transcript.
Are you suddenly single? Death, divorce, and even deployment can happen. Even to homeschool parents. Suddenly, and unexpectedly. So now what?
If you have been homeschooling, you can continue to homeschool your children. If you are single, you can still homeschool your children. Here are some websites that may help:
Aside from the homeschool issues, I can suggest one other thing. Limit the amount of change as much as you can. Something very dramatic has happened in your children’s lives. Try to prevent any other change from happening if you can. Keep their school the same, their home the same, and their schedule the same, as much as possible. Experts say that limiting the stresses you CAN control, at least for the first year, is very important. Obviously something will have to change, but if housing and child support are provided, then perhaps some of the other changes can wait. Visit your church (or a large church in your area) and ask to speak to the pastor for advice and resources.

The Total Transcript Solution is geared for parents who need to make a transcript. It is intended to break the process down into small, easy to manage elements.
The Comprehensive Record Solution is geared for parents who know they need to do more than “just a transcript.” It will enable you to create the transcript, but also the course descriptions, reading list, activities and award list and work samples that go into a “comprehensive” record.
The Comprehensive Record Solution includes just a brief overview of making a transcript, and provides a simple transcript template. It’s possible to get your transcript done if all you order is the Comprehensive Record Solution. If you need more help with your transcripts, or want more templates, more training, and personalized help, then you will want to get the Total Transcript Solution as well.
If you haven’t purchased anything yet, I recommend you get the Comprehensive Record Solution first. Later, if you need additional transcript help, then purchase the Total Transcript Solution. They don’t really overlap much at all. The Total Transcript Solution is ALL about transcripts, The Comprehensive Record Solution is ALL about course descriptions with just some basic training on transcripts. But you can look inside CRS to see if it looks good to you. Just watch this series of videos to see what you actually get in the product: http://www.comprehensiverecordsolution.com/blog/?p=60 (Make sure to leave me a comment with your feedback!)
If you have already purchased the Total Transcript Solution, then I know you will REALLY benefit from the content of the Comprehensive Record Solution. You area already familiar with me, you know my position on many high school topics, and you must already like my writing style Since there isn’t much overlap between the Total Transcript Solution and the Comprehensive Record Solution, if you have enjoyed the fist one, this will also be a GREAT fit for you.
The Comprehensive Record Solution provides the training and templates and real life examples of successful high school records.
Some so-called “Honor Societies” aren’t very honorable. For a fee, they will allow anyone to become a member. Some will name the student in a book of “Who’s Who” – but again, it’s all for a fee. Colleges know that parents may be tempted to purchase these kinds of accolades. They may not be regarded with any esteem at all.
This is one honor society for homeschoolers that has some real admission standards. That is Eta Sigma Alpha website . Even with that organization, however, the colleges may not notice a difference. Unless they check the website, they may assume that it’s just like the other honor societies.
Many honor societies are just money-making businesses, as far as I can tell. I don’t think an honor society will necessarily help you. They may not be worth the money.
The biggest value of achieving honors comes from learning to work hard. You get that value from getting good grades, having good test scores, getting honors through testing, and having an outside activity that the student loves to do.
Learn the SECRET to getting your student placed at the TOP of the stack for college admission consideration as well as one of those MASSIVE university scholarships. What better way to encourage techie kids to read! Nintendo DS is now an E-Reader!
I saw this on the news, and it looks like a great way to encourage kids to read using modern technology. As the mother of an electrical engineer, I can tell you that I often felt Kevin was hard-wired to enjoy wired toys. He loved to read, but he would have loved to read even MORE if he were using something techie. Even kids who don’t love reading might be lured into literature with the help of a gadget.
Nintendo offers a game pack that isn’t a game at all, it’s a personal library of literature called “100 Classic Books.”
100 Classic Books is the unique release from Nintendo that transforms the Nintendo DS family of handheld video game system into a library of timeless English literature. Compatible with DS, DS Lite and DSi models it is filled with 100 classic works from English literature, highlighted by works from authors such as William Shakespeare, Jules Verne, Jane Austen, Mark Twain and more. Additional features include the ability to adjust the size of text, place virtual bookmarks and even download new content via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service (broadband Internet connection required).
I think it sounds like fun! My husband is loving his Kindle, and it’s just about the same thing.
Go, techies, go!
By the way, I am having a Gold Care Club webinar this Tuesday, 11/16 at 4PM Pacific Time. The topic is “Giving Gifts that Pay for College.” These webinars are normally just for my Gold Care Club members, but I decided to open this month’s webinar to everyone. Please feel free to invite your friends to this presentation. I will also be answering your high school questions at the end.
If you are longing for a good conference about junior high and high school issues, I have great news! Did you know that is what my Gold Care Club is all about? There are 5 classes running constantly online, and those classes change every month. There is also a live webinar and a recorded webinar each month. All these classes are excellent for people who are beginning to think about high school, and also for parents that are desperately trying to finish things up before their student graduates in just a few months!

Midnight in Alaska, on a cruise ship on open water. I’m looking for the Northern Lights with my husband. Instead of the Aurora Borealis I saw birds. Dozens of small yellow birds, flapping like crazy, illuminated by the lights of the ship. Not bats, not moths. Tiny, bright yellow birds.
The next morning I asked the Naturalist on the ship. Dressed like a Park Ranger, I thought for sure she would have the answer. Instead she replied “I don’t do birds.” I needed an answer, though! Yellow birds flying at midnight over open ocean? How can you not be curious about that? So I turned to a TRUE expert. A homeschooler.
Apparently this bird behavior is not uncommon. “The birds you saw were most likely a migrating flock of Warblers looking for a place to rest. They travel at night, sometimes over the open water. They could have been either of 3 or 4 different species of Warblers.”
I’m so thankful for this homeschool student! I refer to him often in my classes, when I talk about delight-directed learning. This young man studied ornithology every year of high school. His art and English was tied to his love of birds, as he wrote and illustrated for nature magazines. Now an adult in college, he is still enjoying his passion for birds. He discovered an Arctic Tern near Spokane Washington recently, and had a summer job studying Red Crossbills in Idaho.
Homeschoolers specialize in unique things. Encourage them to follow their passion. Please. So they can answer questions for the rest of us!
