This is interesting reading. Check out this college’s explanation of academic merit scholarships. UVU Academic Merit Scholarships. What can you learn?
First, their financial aid is DIRECTLY tied to ACT scores. By studying for the test, you can save thousands of dollars.
Second, notice how easily they can convert an SAT score to an ACT score. Colleges are used to seeing both tests.
Third, GPA matters. Although this college doesn’t put high school GPA on their grid, many colleges do. Notice how GPA and ACT scores relate. See how the two pieces of data mirror each other? Higher GPAs are correlated with higher ACT scores. That’s why a great homeschool GPA is quite reasonable if you have high test scores.
Finally, notice how students don’t have to be perfect in order to get great scholarships. An ACT score of 22 is about average – and it still earns the ‘Distinguished Scholarship.” Average students CAN earn merit scholarships.

I chose this scholarship because you can ALL apply. Deadline: March 31, 2011**$1000. The 2011 GRHS Essay Contest is open to middle school students (sixth through eighth grade), high school students and full-time undergraduate university/college students. The subject of the paper must be related to German-Russian history, heritage or culture and must be the contestant’s original work. A contestant does not need to be of German-Russian heritage to enter the contest. Previous contestants are encouraged to enter each year; however, resubmission of previously judged work is not permitted.
As new generations are born and the older generations vanish, our youth become ever less aware of their cultural and ethnic origins. An important function of GRHS is to stimulate interest and awareness among young people of the dramatic history of the German Russian people.
This is important for several reasons. Knowledge of our cultural origins gives us a sense of identity, of belonging and of continuity.
More importantly, an understanding of the lives of our ancestors is an important aspect of decision making in our contemporary world. Although our ancestors lived in a completely different context from our own, many similar societies and cultures still exist. Although many of our ancestors were poor and clung to a much more tenuous existence than we do today, they had the same human needs, emotions and aspirations.
Understanding how these were expressed and how lives were managed under extreme circumstances gives us the strength and understanding to manage our own lives today.

Many times music scholarships really aren’t a scholarship at all. They are really more like a WORK STUDY PROGRAM.
Music scholarships many require many hours invested in practicing and accompanying. Students may spend hours playing music they don’t like to accompany other musicians and singers. This level of commitment may be required by a music scholarship. A music scholarship may have relatively low monetary value, and may represent a work study program earning far below minimum wage. If a college offers a large tuition waivers (full ride or full tuition) the music scholarships may not be worth it at all.
My son Alex loves playing the piano. However, he didn’t consider a piano major or minor, or scholarship. He wanted to go into political science and take piano for fun. He thought about a music scholarship, but at our university these scholarships were more like “work study”. The $3000 scholarship required about 10 hours per week, all year long. That is a remarkably rotten hourly rate! He took piano for fun every quarter while he was in school.
If you are thinking about a music scholarship, make sure you take a tour of the campus. My son chose our university, in part, because it had a grand piano in every dorm and almost every building. Music students need to spend some time looking at the music labs. If you had a science major you would focus on the science labs, and these are just like a science lab that you have to look for and evaluate. Even when using it “just for fun” those pianos can be important to kids!

Scholarships abound for STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
Tracie wrote on Facebook: “Lee, When is the best time to start applying for scholarships, of any kind? What about the essays, any tips/hints? How many should you apply for?”
Tracie, many private scholarships like this are available junior year, but most are for senior year in high school, starting the summer before senior year. Scholarships from colleges are something you apply to when you apply to the college. For tips, see this DVD: http://www.thehomescholar.com/getting-the-big-scholarships-dvd.php

Here is the thing about February and March. It’s the months when homeschooling is the most difficult. The doldrums set in, and life seems more tedious.
But for me, early spring is my FAVORITE time of year! That’s when all my seniors start hearing about admission and scholarships! Although deadlines for admission are often much later in the spring, the early bird gets the worm! Those who applied earlier in the fall are now reaping the rewards. Almost daily now I’m hearing from VERY happy campers about admission and scholarships. I can’t guarantee anything of course, but I can say that if you pay attention to the process, you have a MUCH better chance of success. Read Stacie’s wonderful note!
Lee,
Oh, my, you are wonderful. I wanted to take a few moments before running out the door today to let you know the good news.
Our son Christopher was awarded an Exemplary Merit Scholarship today from our local university. It will pay for 8 semesters of tuition over the next four years.
Three years ago I learned about you. After a bit of looking around on your website I ordered the Convention at Home Kit while holding my breath. Later I met with you for a one-on-one about this son, how set up a plan for the high school years, and how to do the transcript. As a final rung to my list of purchases from you I add “The Total Transcript Solution“. Each time I ordered something from you I just prayed that it would be helpful because money is tight. My hubby dear kept telling me it would all be good. Well, today it all paid off in a big way.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love you, Lee Binz. Thank you for sharing your talents with the rest of the homeschool moms out here. You were right — Colleges and Universities will pay attention to us if we just learn to speak their language.
Happy days to you and yours,
Stacie in Utah
Thank you, Stacie! I really appreciate the positive feedback – it really makes my job worth it!

February is a difficult month for homeschooling. The days are long and dark, and the weather may not always be cooperative. Public schools often plan breaks and vacation days for this time of year because it’s SO easy to get burned out.
Hang on! Don’t give up! It will get better soon, and spring is almost here! What you are doing every day with your children is so important. One day you will look back and be SO glad you did this.
Look at what Julie wrote to me recently:
Hi, my name is Julie and I purchased your wonderful transcript product. I was so grateful for the product I purchased. Your product on how to make transcripts really works. My daughter not only got into her first choice college but won a scholarship as well. Thank-you so much for using the talents and giftings God gave you to make it possible for me to do such a great transcript. So grateful for your program it’s amazing and I will use for my other kids when time comes. It looked amazing and the college loved it! Can’t believe she won a scholarship! May God bless you and your efforts and I will be recommending to every homeschooler I know this wonderful program. Thanks again and I will be posting link on my Facebook page for all my homeschool friends! This would have never happened if it hadn’t been for your amazing transcript helps and templates. Thanks again!

This could be YOU soon! YOU can be the homeschool parent getting admission and scholarships! It’s not just me and my kids, there are LOTS of parents succeeding beyond their wildest dreams. Sure, “results not typical” and “your mileage may vary” but at the same time, if you focus on what you’re doing now, you could be the next success story.
And please, when you get those admission letters and scholarship offers, keep me posted, because other parents need to feel that love from colleges, too!
When you have multiple college offers with wonderful scholarships, how do you decide between colleges?
Here are two methods.
First, you can develop a chart and compare each college. Make sure that comparison includes “your dollars out of pocket each year of college” as your only financial comparison, because there are too many variables to compare any other numbers.
The second method is the livability test. Where does your student want to live for the next four years? It’s not QUITE like choosing a spouse, but it’s still a pretty significant decision. Would your student like to live there for four years? It’s important to note that the PARENT isn’t living there – it’s not a test of where you want to live!
Consider also whether your student will have an adequate support structure in place at college. This might mean a solid church home near campus, or extended family members nearby, or the ability to drive/fly home in case of emergency. It may just mean the presence of some good and trusted friends near campus. College students can sometimes face challenges that require support. Make sure to factor this into your decision.

Are you ready to get serious about homeschooling high school? Send me anemailand let’s talk!
A few summers ago my two sons graduated together from homeschool high school. They were both invited to compete in an all day full-tuition scholarship competition at their first choice university. 108 students competed for those ten full-tuition scholarships, Two of the winners were homeschoolers. Both were mine.
I found myself wondering, “How did that happen?” I believe we received scholarships because of four advantages: curriculum, SAT preparation, documentation, and character. These advantages are available to all families that homeschool through high school:
1. The Curriculum Advantage
2. The Testing Advantage
3. The Comprehensive Records Advantage
4. The Character Advantage
How did both our children win full-tuition scholarships?
