There is a line in the Disney movie “Alladin” that has always stuck with me. The genie tells Alladin that the best way to win the girl is to “Bee yourself”. That strategy works with college applications as well. In this article, you can read about what college admission folks REALLY want to see in an essay. The certainly don’t want lists of facts – they want to SEE THE STUDENT in the words. Read the article here.
Students; Show your real feelings, use your real words. Who are you, really? It’s important to complete your applications right away. College scholarship money is often given out “first come, first served.” Putting off your essays could cost you many thousands of dollars (real money – not monopoly money!)
Parents: edit the essay and correct spelling and grammar, because it really does have to be perfectly edited. Encourage your student to include as many personal feelings as possible. But don’t supply the “perfect word” for them, because that may make it sound like you instead of the student.

Finding the right college is a lot like finding the “love of your life.” That’s one of the things I talk about in my video “Finding a College.” It’s all about finding a college you love, and convincing the college that they love you in return.
