Consumer Math or Algebra 2?

October 3, 2008

Traci asks:  Our daughter has taken Algebra I and Geometry.  She would really like to take Consumer Math, and begin a small online business, instead of taking Algebra II.  My question is:  How does this look to colleges?  It seems that when I look at what everyone else is doing, they always include those 3 maths.

Tracy,

If your daughter wants to go to college, then Algebra 2 would be very important.  It’s extremely helpful to take Algebra 2 before she takes the SAT test, usually during the junior year.  Those three math classes really are important for college admission to most colleges. although there are some colleges without that requirement.  She may be able to fit in a consumer math class either before or after Algebra 2, and it may help her in the long run!

You don’t mention her age, but if it’s possible to follow her interests and take a consumer math course this year, I would encourage you to do that if you can still finish Algebra 2 in her junior year.  Taking a consumer math class will help her to firm up all the math skills she will need, helping her to feel more comfortable before she moves on to the next level.

Since your daughter is interested in an online business, you may want to point her to a business degree, just to get her interested in colleges.  Try to encourage her interests in a home business so that you can encourage her to develop the talents she will need to run the business herself.  Even home businesses have a LOT of math (believe me, I know!) and it will help her to have a good understanding of math and communication skills that a business degree offer.

I hope that helps!

I just received the first run of my new audio course, “Gifted Education at Home.”  This course covers strategies for educating gifted kids that work remarkably well for kids of all abilities.  The concepts are designed to maximize the benefits of homeschooling and enable parents to perfectly match their educational strategies with their children’s needs.  Look for more information in our November newsletter!
