The kids start filling each others’ stockings with presents as soon as we bring them out. By Christmas Eve, there is hardly any room left for me to play Santa!

  2. Jen Hodges says:

We have a collection of Christmas books from various sources—my childhood, given to the children as gifts over the years, used book sales, etc.— from picture books to Dickens. We place them out for anyone to read over the season. The book box has grown heavy over the years! The children look forward to re-reading their favorites, and these stories will likely be shared w/ their own families one day.

Our favorite Christmas event is our church’s annual Christmas talent show and potluck. It is a wonderful time of sharing food and laughing together with our church family.

We travel to PA & OH to visit with family and we usually attend a Christmas Eve church service. Our tradition is to open one small gift on Christmas Eve, and then take turns opening gifts on Christmas Day so everyone can see who is getting what! Some years we also bake a birthday cake for Jesus (even though we don’t know what day He was actually born on).

One of our favorites is to take a whole day and bake cookies. We reminisce about years gone by and past Christmas’. Our thoughts and dreams for the new year. After the cookies are done, we make up plates, taking them to the neighbors wishing them a Merry Christmas.

For the last 3 years, we have been making (by hand) felt ornaments that correspond to our Advent study (they follow the Jesse Tree style). The children stitch while their father & I read our Advent lesson. Our prayer is that as we recapture the life of Christ with stitches & scripture that the real gift of Jesus is being tied to their hearts. That is the most perfect gift a parent could receive!

My favorite way has been to go visit Grandparents on Christmas day. Now that all but one has passed away, I especially miss this opportunity that my kids had to share with their Great-grandparents.

We have so many Christmas traditions. On the top of the list would be baking cookies and making gingerbread houses together!!

  11. Verginia says:

As our 6 children have grown (half are adults now), we find that traditions are a rich source of unity, but they also need to be flexible. Sometimes traditions are for a season. So letting go of them gracefully, with hope for new significant memories for the future as our family expands with in-laws, is a good practice in humility and open-hearted embracing of new seasons in life. So enjoy your traditions and be open to new ones in new seasons of life!

Christmas is such a magical time of year. As a family we all gather ’round the TV for all the Hallmark Christmas specials. We also plan a special trip to the mountains to pick out the perfect Christmas tree and bring it home and decorate it with special ornaments, some homemade, some gifts over the years. We also love to sing & listen to Christmas songs in the car to work and back everyday. We truly LOVE the Christmas season.

  13. Shari says:

Our favorite Christmas traditions involve service. #1 is serving each other. Each morning during the month of December we secretly draw names from a Christmas Jar and then during the day we do a secret service for that person. It is fun to see everyone trying to accomplish their good deed without getting caught. (We have 6 children) #2 is baking tons of gingersnaps and delivering them to all of our neighbors and friends to wish them Happy Holidays. It is always of fun time working together, listening to Christmas music, getting sugar everywhere. These traditions bring the true spirit of Christmas into our home.

  14. Ann says:

Well, not necessarily a favorite way to celebrate, but a fun way and unique to our family: We go on “ra-pa-pum-pum” drives. When we see a house that is especially lavishly decorated, or that stands out in the crowd, we sing, “ra-pa-pum-pum,” as in The Little Drummer Boy! We sing louder the more striking the house is. This was my husband’s creation, but we’ve been doing it since before our kids were born.

  15. Evelyn says:

Well, we have always been with extended family during the holidays and each year has become more precious as my husband’s parents are slowly becoming unable to do the same things and participate at the same levels that they always have done. It is difficult to watch the decline in their health and ability to enjoy everything, but with all of us making a commitment to being together, we have a special time that has and is still creating sweet memories that tie our hearts with lasting bonds. I lost my daddy nearly 12 years ago and it has caused all of us to make sure to MAKE TIME for our family. God bless.

Our family tradition is putting up the Christmas tree on the day after Thanksgiving. We decorate it while listening to music. We also love making cookies and fudge.

  17. Alicia says:

Some of our favorite Christmas memories as a family come from participating in a live Christmas Trail our neighbors used to host for the public. The trail told the story of the birth of Jesus and ended at a live nativity. We helped by being live actors and acting out “scenes.” They have since moved our of this area, but our fond memories of helping with the Christmas Trail live on.

  19. Tina Reed says:

Every year on Christmas eve, we gather as a family ( we have 5 children ) by the fireplace and Christmas tree. We drink egg nog and hot chocolate ( depending on each one’s preference), and eat cookies. My husband reads from the gospels the account of the birth of Christ. If we have guess that evening, they join us for this tradition. We always follow by a time of prayer, with the renewed sense of awe over our Savior.
