Do you have a Homeschool Stress Manager?

October 9, 2008

A friend stayed at a Holiday Inn Express the other day, and there was a unique greeter at the door!  Kip Holiday was his name.  The official title on his business card states that he is the “Stress Manager” of the hotel.  His bio on the hotel website says “When you stay with us, you arrive as guests, leave as family! Just ask the resident Stress Manager, Kip Holiday, our Golden Retriever!”  Read about him here.

Stress Manager!  Isn’t that the most wonderful idea?  Perhaps that’s why we had such success homeschooling.  We had wonderful socialization, you know.  Not just experiences with “regular folk” on a daily basis, but we also had our stress-relieving dog with us every step of the way.  How much more information can a child absorb from a book, when they are cozily curled up with their beloved pet?  That must be the reason for our successes as homeschoolers, right?

Stress Manager, Kip Holiday.  Awesome!

Ummm… our only pet right now, “Bubbles” the goldfish is serving as a negative example. Never get a pet on impulse (this was a prize at a social event). Research the pet’s needs before buying (a tiny bowl will not cut it). Ask yourself if your lifestyle will accommodate the pet (so far so good). Be willing to accept that your first choice in pet might not be right for you (a Siamese fighting fish would be better for my daughter). “Bubbles” is currently fighting a chronic disease due to our blunders. We’re currently breeding an antibiotic-resistent strain of the disease I’m sure.

I’m sure that when (not if) he dies, my daughter will never forget the lessons. Meanwhile, I’ve reserved a book on Siamese fighting fish at the library…

So no, our pet is just the opposite.

We have a yellow lab that my 10 year old loves to curl up on the couch with. Not necessarily to read…maybe I’ll suggest that.
