Sometimes people want to know what to tell family members that don’t approve of homeschooling. Of course, there are lots of things you *could* say, but if you want to just assure them that homeschooling works, feel free to use my story!
We homeschooled through high school independently without co-op or accreditation. I gave colleges a transcript I made using WORD on my home computer, I gave them a diploma from “homeschool diploma.com” Both of my boys were given admission to every college they applied to, they were given scholarships from each college, and they were given full tuition scholarships to their first choice university. After they were given the full tuition scholarships, we found out that they were chosen for the award because of…… wait for it!….. drum roll please!…… SOCIALIZATION! Apparently they were watching all the applicants, looking to see how well they got along with other kids when they through nobody was looking. SO! What about college? What about Scholarships? What about Socialization? You tell them my story, OK?
They may not suddenly become supportive, but stay strong. My mother-in-law “forbid” me from homeschooling in the beginning. Now she knows it was the right thing to do, and she’s glad we did it.

I love this story! Our first year homeschooling our older girls (then grades 9 and 11) my BIL offered one $300 to go back to school. Now, they tolerate us but can’t argue test scores and social skills. They are almost ready to admit that it is a good thing for our youngest.

I have one gifted and one challenged child. It’s easy for skeptics to say “Oh, well, homeschooling obviously works for that child, but that other child…” I’ve learned to live with the hurt because I, unlike the skeptics, know my child. I know this child would languish in the “special ed system.” I know that this child has been maturing and learning because of a huge dollop of grace from God.
Still stings, though.
