Too Many or Too Few Fine Arts Credits

January 13, 2012

Are you an art person? Most people tend to either love the arts, or if you are like me you struggle with them. Even if you or your student struggle with the fine arts, colleges still want to see some on a high school transcript.

One may also research what the colleges want to see and plan accordingly. For instance, the Art Institute of Seattle might have no problem whatsoever with multiple art credits, whereas the College of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University might prefer to see less art and more math, science, and animal-related activities.

Thanks for helping clarify that question, Lee. It can be confusing. When I offer one-week Drama Camp Intensives to homeschoolers, I have sometimes had moms express that they are frustrated about how to show the work on their child’s transcript. They ask, “How much of a credit is involvement in a one-week intensive?”

My approach for my own dramatic kids is to log the hours spent working on drama productions and give the child one credit in Fine Arts – Drama when he/she reaches 120 hours or so. Even if those hours are accumulated gradually over several years of high school rather than all in one production, when the Carnegie Units total one-credit’s-worth (120+ hours), the student’s transcript should reflect it.

Excellent comments about collecting credits over a few years, Sabrina! You’re absolutely right!
