Foreign Language is like Weight Watchers

March 9, 2010

Hi Lee,
I was wondering if you have any thoughts on Rosetta Stone software for learning a foreign language?
Thanks,
~ Diane R.

Dear Diane,
I’ve heard that it’s a good curriculum WHEN it is a good fit for the child.  It’s just not always a good fit.  I would try it to see.

We used PowerGlide, and that was very effective for us.  Others love Tell Me More. These can also  be found from most homeschool resources, including Sonlight CurriculumRockSolid Discount Homeschool Books, and ChristianBook.com.

It’s more about being consistent everyday, really.  The problem with foreign language is the same problem I have with Weight Watchers.  It only works when you actually DO the program, LOL!

    Hi!

I agree with the Weight Watchers analogy! I was a German major in college and use the Rosetta Stone with my family. It it great with repetion (sorry! we all need it to learn the language!) pronunciation, etc. The newest version has CD’s to listen to on the go. It is a natural approach which is great if you are a child and absorbing the language. Most of us ask questions and need the reason why. For example, in German endings change for how a word is used in a sentence. If you see the same word spelled two different ways it can be confusing. I recommend finding a book that explains simple grammar of your language. I have German made Simple, a inexpensive and VERY well done book as a supplement. We loved it so much we have it in Latin and Spanish! Foreign Language is foreign but can be demystified! Good Luck!
