It’s time for another giveaway from The HomeScholar! Summer is the perfect time of year to grab a new read and take time to focus on ourselves a little. Our giveaway this month will help you do just that!
The Busy Homeschool Mom’s Guide to Romance: Nurturing Your Marriage Through the Homeschool Years by Heidi St. John is music to the ears of any homeschool mom who feels caught between homeschooling and husband, math and marriage.
From Heidi’s website:
Homeschooling offers parents the best opportunity to shepherd their children both academically and spiritually. Yes. It’s worth it. But do you ever feel as if your life is “all homeschool—all the time?”
Do you ever wonder where the girl your husband married went? This book is for every mom who has collapsed into bed at the end of the day, looked into the eyes of her husband and promised “tomorrow” she’d have time for him.
Trouble is, tomorrow finds her more exhausted than the day before.
If you have ever felt caught between the demands of homeschooling your children and meeting the needs of your husband, you’re not alone. Read and discover how even a busy homeschool mom can make time to nurture her marriage. It’s not as hard as you think—and more important than you may realize.
Office Manager Stephanie had this to say after reading through the book:
This book truly is part homeschool book, part marriage book, and part devotional. I wasn’t sure what to expect – and was met with groans and eye rolls from my teen when she saw that I would be reading a book about “romance.” This is far from a simple self-help book about marriage. You’ll find yourself agreeing with Heidi when she shares her personal moments. (Yes, I’ve wondered where “That Girl” went!) You’ll find yourself energized and recharged with each quotation and scripture that are sprinkled throughout this lovely book. Your marriage is truly more important than what math curriculum you choose. We just need a reminder once in a while! I’m truly considering adding this to my teen’s suggested reading list before she moves onto the next phase of her life as a wife and mother. It is perfect for the new homeschooler learning to create balance between the different faces of mom or the seasoned homsechool mom that may be facing a bit of burn out. I’d encourage every homeschool wife to give this a read!

Hey Lee,
What a book! Over our 16 years of homeschooling (and, God willing, 11 more to go!) it’s been a constant “creative challenge” to balance my time and energy between my DH and the kiddos (5 of them!). From time-to-time I’ve been satisfied with a ‘solution’…and then they get home from camp, or vacation is over (LOL)!!
Anyway, I might have to check out this book – whether or not I win it!

God’s timing is so perfect. I needed to read this today. The joy of marriage can get lost in the heap of homeschool books, schedules, and “extra-curricular” activities. I love it when someone shares practical ideas and help from their own life and experience. Can’t wait to read this one. My husband and I have been married for 15 years and we have 6 great kids!

Romance? What’s that? Romance is something I’d like to see more of in my marriage, but I truly think finding the time has been our problem.
We have homeschooled for over 10 years. We are in our forties, have a son about to graduate college, a teen daughter, and… we have just celebrated our silver anniversary (25 years) this past October.

Our five children have been 4 hours away staying with relatives this past week, and we thought we would have nothing to talk about without them here. My husband of 11 years, and I just celebrated our anniversary, and we laughed, and talked, and yes brought the flame back! Though I don’t recommend sending your children away, it made me realize how absorbed in “school” I am all year. I am very interested in reading this book. It’s a much needed and long overdue resource!

I have been married to my dear husband and friend for 19 years. He is very supportive and patient with me as I try to balance all my responsibilites with homeschooling our 11 and 7 yr old children. I thank God for him!! I do feel like he gets put on the “back burner” much of the time, and I know that he should come before the children. I would be very interested in reading this book.

Sounds like a great book! My husband and I have been married for 20 years just last month. He supprised me with a rose for each year and a picnic basket of cheese, crackers and bubbly. Lin says:
After 21 year of marriage, I’m sure my hubby would like more romance. Have you ever seen your hubby’s big puppy-dog eyes and “come hither” look while you’re in the middle of drooling over a homeschool catalog and thinking about an economics course two years from now? I’ll just need to make sure to read it during summer break, while there’s still time!

Janet says:
We have been married for 16 years. I definitely do let homeschooling consume me. This book should be a great read and support. Thanks.
July 1st, 2011 at 6:25 am
Lisa says:
We have found that romance can be one of the most difficult things to keep alive while homeschooling. We have 5 children, the oldest will graduate in 2012 and we will have 16 more years of homeschooling after that as our youngest is 2. It’s hard to believe that we will have been married 38 years when we graduate the last, so anything to keep the marriage happy during those years is welcome. This book sounds like an answer to prayer. My sweetheart and I have been married 22 years and are walking through the wilderness of unemployment right now. This book sounds like an oasis as I am looking for ways to encourage him.

We have been blessed to be married for a month short of 16 years! We have been homeschooling for 14 years. We love homeschooling, but we do work to keep our marriage fresh. I am excited to see a book that will hopefully talk about the importance of keeping a marriage alive! My heart breaks with so many broken marriages. I am glad to see something that is meant to uplift and help change marriages for the better!

Three of our sons have Graduated now from homeschooling all 12 years. We are grateful to God for the wisdom and peace He has given us to make it “all” a possibility.

This looks like a great read. We are looking forward to our 19th wedding anniversary…one of the best investments my husband ever made was a lock on the bedroom door

Monday was our 19th anniversary! We homeschool our two girls… 4th and 10th grade. When things get hectic, I think laughter is the best medicine. We remind each other of funny incidents in the past. Then again, sometimes we just get alone and get really quiet without the kids. That’s refreshing too!

Help! I’m not home schooling my own kids–they’re all church kids whose parents have asked me to help. The youth are ages 12 to 17, and next month TWO MORE high schoolers will be here!
Our home seems overrun with kids, sometimes. My husband buys them desks and chairs, sports equipment, and treats. He also gives them a Word from the Lord before he leaves for work, and goes off praying while the kids and I have devotions. We’ve been married 25 years and never had our own children. Now look what God has done!

Romance is hard work as my husband is working for FEMA and is gone except for a weekend a month. I also have the care of my 89-year old father-in-law.

I’ve been married 16 yrs. and my girls are 14 and 11 yrs. old. We were just commenting this week on how there are so many of their friends popping in and out that it makes it hard to pin down any quiet time together. We have to leave and go to Starbucks just to have a quiet conversation sometimes. lol

This looks like a really great read. I think the main curriculum homeschoolers should “use” is life and one subject is marriage–what better way to “teach” than to show your husband you want to be one with him and be in love with him. Observant little eyes will learn what a blessing from God marriage can be.
My husband and I have been married 18years and have been homeschooling for 12 years. Now that my oldest is a teen I realize how important it is to pray and just live out what I tell her is true.

tomorrow is my 31 anniversary- have homeschooled since 1986- have eight children- still schooling a 8th grader and a four grader – certainly I didn’t do my math to figure I would be at this a long time.
Really it’s been great- won’t of known my children as well, nor allow them to be who they are without homeschooling- Quite the adventure!

This book sounds SO GREAT! St. John is such a great speaker. She is very funny, real, encouraging, and directs us to the Lord. Oh, I guess I’d better answer the question… We’ve been married for nearly 11 years.

This book does sound wonderful!! That is me everyday: getting in bed when he is about to pass out after waiting for me and promising tomorrow I will have time for him!
Luckily I married a man who is one in a BILLION! We will have been married 21 years ago on the 28th (and together for 23). I still feel the same way I did 23 years ago. He is 1/2 of me!!!!
He was an only child and didn’t/doesn’t understand sibling rivalry let alone having a homeschooling wife and kids. Especially when they went to public school (a night mare) for thru grades 5 and 7 (now grades 10 and 12). (Our kids begged us to homeschool for 5 months and I am so glad they did.) But he is an incredible husband and Dad and keeps on going off to work a very physical job everyday. So that they can homeschool.
We are so blessed. We got hit by Hurricane Charley 8-13-2006. He lost his job and ever since then we have been fighting the economical problems that followed. Unfortunately our extremely perceptive kids had to go thru what no children should have to go thru.
Truly blessings often come disguised we all have definitely grown in our faith as a result!!!
With 2 high school age teens (a daughter and a son) I am hoping to learn how to homeschool, give them the time they need, and give more time for our marriage also!

We have been married 19 years this coming Sept. I home school 5 children, almost 17 yr old – 6 yr old. My days are full of work, work, work.
I would love some fresh ideas to be a better wife. I don’t want the kids to leave the house some day and my honey and I not know each other anymore!

This sounds like a great book that all homeschool moms need to read. Husbands should be a priority…they are the ones out there working so homeschool moms can be at home with the children. Yet, sometimes putting our priorities in the proper order is easier said then done. We’ve been married for 25 years.

My beloved and I have been married for 15 years. We’ve been homeschooling for 10.
The other day I asked him why he married me (I was teasing around). He replied, “Because I wanted to be with you all the time.” That is also how I feel about him. He’s my greatest treasure besides the Lord.
