Great economic news!
When I speak to groups, I often emphasize that private schools are usually NOT more expensive than public schools. They have more money to give away, so the scholarship awards are much larger. In fact, if you compare the actual amount students SPEND on college, rather than the “sticker price,” many times public and private universities are the SAME price for a family.
Now, with the current economic decline, the situation is actually improving. To attract more students, colleges have to provide a good value or their classrooms go empty. As many public schools are increasing the tuition due to state government financial constraints, private schools have the ability to increase financial aid to students.
Read this article in the New York Times.
To Keep Students, Colleges Cut Anything but Aid
It reports that “Students considering a wide range of private schools, as well as those who are already enrolled, can expect to get more aid this year, not less.” This is because “they’d rather have a discounted person in the seat than no one in the seat.”
Don’t think that a private school is MORE expensive than a public school. Instead, remember that private universities have more money to give away, because they aren’t tied to the limited or bankrupt state government budgets.
Don’t give up hope!
