“Hands-on” American Government

June 27, 2008

Instead of using a book, you can search for experiences that will teach your homeschoolers concepts in Civics and American Government.  Some great experiences include:

  • YMCA Youth and Government
  • TeenPact (Similar, but with a Christian perspective)
  • Being a Page at the State Capitol
  • Working for an election campaign

Youth and Government, and Teen Pact, are groups that have teens “take over the state capitol” to learn how government operates.  The kids become senators, legislators, governor, lobbyist, etc., and act those roles as they propose and pass bills.  Both of my kids really enjoyed the experience.  Alex wrote about it in his College Application essays.
