Here’s something to consider before choosing a high school math curriculum. Because many textbooks have a video tutorial, it might be a good idea to have your child choose which video tutorial they prefer. Abeka, Saxon, DIVE Cds, Teaching Textbooks, VideoText – to us it may not matter, but to the teenager it might. Sometimes they get so annoyed by a person on video that it distracts them from learning. For that reason, I like to suggest that parents give their kids 2 or 3 choices, and then let the teen decide. Here are some video samples for you to look at, and help you compare choices with your teen.
DIVE CDs coordinate with Saxon Math.
Teaching Textbooks are very popular, and they demonstrate every problem in the book

Abeka uses a classroom setting in their video

My son was so distracted by the monotonous tone of the cd-rom he had for math. We bought a new math program with different people and he told me he really like it. Score!

Christy,
I remember being SHOCKED when my son Kevin chose Saxon with DIVE CDs. I had avoided Saxon the whole time we homeschooled, because I didn’t like the way it looked. Finally, when I let Kevin choose for himself, guess which one he liked? He chose Saxon because it had no pictures – just lots and lots of problems. He loves math problems, can you believe it? We used Saxon with DIVE because that’s what HE chose. If it had been my choice, I certainly would have chosen something more colorful

Thanks for the site. I noticed you didn’t list Math U See under math programs. Is there a reason why? Thanks so much.

Hi DeAnna,
The only reason I didn’t add Math U See is because I didn’t think of it – but I’ll add their math demo to the list. Good idea – thank you!
Blessings,
Lee

Here’s another one for you… Ask Dr. Callahan. We LOVE it. We’re using Algebra 1 this year (based on Harold Jacobs’ Algebra) with the dvd instruction. The Callahans are college professors and homeschooled their kids as well. The videos are clear and have a humor about them. They also come with one year of email support for the kids, too. http://www.askdrcallahan.com
