I saw this article in the morning paper about Washington State developing stricter criteria for graduation.
They are thinking about increasing the graduation requirements to match college admission requirements, so that more kids can go to college. The high schools are hearing from businesses and colleges that their students are not prepared for college OR for the work force. This is their solution to making sure the kids are educated in high school. The problem? They haven’t set aside funds. The plan is now going through the State Board of Education, and then it has to get through the State Legislature for funding.
I have a couple of thoughts here. First: don’t feel like you can’t do a good job of educating your children. I know a lot of homeschoolers with a lot of different kids and styles, and I haven’t seen one that wasn’t prepared for either college or the work force. Second: recognize that our homeschools don’t have the kind of bureaucracy demonstrated here. We can change our graduation plans in minutes – just by making a decision. We have the flexibility to take feedback and change what we do, even in the middle of a school year.

The other problem with these kids like my ds who is special ed are now going to be doomed to a lifetime of mennial jobs because the only diploma he can get(in NYS, only Regents diplomas are deing offer starting in 2009) is a college prep one. So even if a kid is going into a “trade” and not college he/she still has to pass 5 state-wide tests, 2 in math, 1 each in social studies, English and science. No way (I am being realistic here) ds can do that sooo that is where homeschooling comes in.
