It can be hard to know when a course should go on a high school transcript. Sometimes it is clear-cut, and other times it’s more difficult to decide.
Lee,
Can I count Sonlight Core100 as my daughter’s American History requirement on her High School transcript if she will be completing it in 8th grade?
Thanks for your input!
~ Susan in Arkansas
Dear Susan,
Sonlight Core 100 is meant for a wide age range, so that families can use it together. It assumes, though, that a 7th grader using the material will get middle school information out of it, while an older 10th grade child will be older and more mature, and will be able to get a high school amount of information out of the same material. So there isn’t one right or wrong answer to your question.
If you are certain your daughter learned a high school amount because she tested with a CLEP or SAT 2 or AP test, then you CERTAINLY should give her high school credit. If she will return to American History again in high school, then she almost certainly should not have this CORE 100 on her transcript – you’ll save her American History credit for later. Sometimes parents just “know” that it’s high school level, like when an especially gifted child uses a multi-age curriculum when they are young on the age spectrum.
This is one good reason to start high school record keeping in 7th and 8th grade. Then if you decide to use these courses for high school, you’ll have all the records that you need ready for you! You can keep this experience for now, and decide later if you will use it on a transcript.
If you need more help, this is one issue that I talk a lot about in my e-book on transcripts, “The Easy Truth About Homeschool Transcripts.”
I hope that helps!
Blessings,
Lee
I always send the answer to parents as soon as I write it. That way if there is a delay in getting it posted on my blog, they still get the answer as quickly as possible. As soon as she received it, Susan send me a reply thanking me.
Our homeschool group watched your Homeschooling Highschool DVD recently and all of us came away so much more sure of ourseves that we can do this!! Thanks for your inspiration to so many moms and for your answer to my particular question!!!

The “Preparing to Homeschool High School” presentation is part of the Gold Care Club right now. I recorded the seminar before a live audience at a Christian homeschool group.

Thanks, Donna! We still have just a few little details to iron out with the website, but I do like the “look and feel” of it. Did you see that we got a search function on the main page now? That will make it much easier for people to find answers they need! Anyway, thanks!
Blessings,
Lee
