Homeschool 911

July 25, 2008

I got a panicky call today – not unusual.  It started out normal, but when I explained that I had one appointment available in August, but the other openings were all in September – this mom was suddenly in full panic mode!

There are times when you have a TRUE emergency, like a natural disaster, fire, or theft.  If that’s the case, please let me know!  Like a doctor who takes emergency patients in between routine physicals, I’ll always try to squeeze in clients that are having an emergency.  My client today had her computer stolen.  All of her high school plans and records – gone!  With school just weeks away, she desperately NEEDED help with her plan.  In an hour, we had everything all figured out again, with a great plan for her coming year.

If you have an emergency, and you just can’t wait for an appointment, please let me know!  I’ll do my best to fit you in as soon as possible.

Same here. I kept all my daughters records on my palm calendar. Everything is now erased and I need to rebuild as best I can. Very deflating news indeed. How could you help this mom in a way she couldn’t do this herself? Was she already a client? Or were you acting as a morale booster? Your insight is much appreciated.

    Hi Melinda,
The “emergency” mom I was working with was NOT already a client, she was just turning to me because of her crisis. She told me she had spent hours planning her school year, and she was so upset about having her computer stolen that she couldn’t even begin to remember her plans. She mentioned that she wanted to start school in just two weeks.

Yes, I was trying to be a morale booster – because it’s VERY upsetting to have your entire school planning stolen. But I was also helping her to regain her homeschool plans. I emailed her my planning guide, that I use with consultations. She said that guide alone helped her feel more peaceful! When we talked on the phone, we carefully discussed every subject area. We could quickly go through her thought process, and decide on what she wanted to teach and which curriculum she planned to use. After about 1-1/2 hours on the phone, she felt like she had a complete high school plan ready to go.

Sometimes when people have a crisis like that, they will need a transcript. The woman last week was just beginning 9th grade, so it wasn’t an issue for her. But for others, the biggest deal is getting a transcript. I can help just by asking the right questions: what did you do for math last year? Guided questions that can get the information for class titles, grade, credit value, completion date, activities. The information is stuck deep inside, and it’s my job to ask the right questions, so the information can come out! For a transcript, I can also provide a template for you – or fill in the information myself, whichever you prefer.

So how can I help? I can help with morale, but I can also ask the right questions to help you remember what you did – or what you hope to do.

Send me an email, or call my toll free number if you would like some help. My number is 1-888-Lee-2Help.

    Blessings,
    Lee
