Homeschooling after Public School Failure

July 6, 2009

But what do you do if your child is failing public high school and you decide to homeschool them?  What happens to their public school grades?  When a student receives a transcript from a public or private school, that information will need to be included in the homeschool high school transcript, just as it would be included in a transcript if you transferred to another school setting.  If possible, you may want to start homeschooling right away, before too many failing grades accumulate.  You can choose to “re-take” each class at home, so that your child actually learns the material in each class, if that is important to you.  If you child ultimately catches fire with academics, and decides to go to college after high school, then their early failures will be a great topic for their college admission essay.  Your child could write about why he started homeschooling, and describe the process of changing from a failing public school student into a successful homeschool student.   Colleges LOVE this type of story.  So don’t feel like your failing public school student can’t go to college down the road, should they turn it around in homeschool.  This is not that unusual.
