We must be ready to allow ourselves to be interrupted by God. It is a strange fact that Christians and even ministers frequently consider their work so important and urgent that they will allow nothing to disturb them. They think they are doing God a service in this, but actually they are disdaining God’s “crooked yet straight path” (Gottfried Arnold). But it is part of the discipline of humility that we must not spare our hand where it can perform a service and that we do not assume that our schedule is our own to manage, but allow it to be arranged by God.

Stuff happens. Anyone who knows me knows that I’m all about planning and consistency. And yet, we still have to be willing to let God be in charge – even in our homeschool! The holiday season is coming up. Did you know that the holidays are the leading time of year for death and suicide? It’s the Stress! So go about making plans as you know best. At the same time, if your neighbor needs you -especially this time of year! – lend a hand. In the long run, your children will learn more about life from serving than being served.

Prayer is key for this. At the end of each school year and whenever it’s obvious something needs to change, I ask God to give me flexible academic plans that will allow for interruption and change. So far, God’s thrown some interesting things my way. Good or bad, these lessons have been very valuable. I’ve seen someone burn out because her homeschool schedule was far and away too rigid and demanding. Real life kept intruding (as it will), and this poor mom always complained about being behind schedule. There but for the grace of God go I. So far, we’ve muddled along all right through thick and thin, good days and bad, so there must be something to this “prayer thing.”
