Thanks for the tips for Letters of Recommendation. I especially like your tip on furnishing the student’s activity list, etc. to the person writing the recommendation. I wrote one for a young lady in a class I taught and I didn’t have that benefit. It was a struggle to write it. One question I have is, is it ok if the college receives a recommendation letter BEFORE your transcript? We’re thinking of using a teacher for one of the letters and we know she is really busy come late August/September.

Fun to see a friend “in real life” on my blog, LOL! Yes, it’s OK to send the letters before the transcript! Your application information doesn’t need to arrive all at the same time. Colleges will keep a file for your child, and as things come in, they fill the file. For example, a public school transcript will almost NEVER arrive the same day as the application from the student. The letters of recommendation are sent from someone else – neither the student nor the “school” so it won’t arrive the same day either. So just make sure she uses the same identifiers for your student – full name and birthdate will usually suffice.

LOL, next time someone says something about socialization, I’ll just point them to this video – you’re advocating what’s known as “networking,” which is definitely a social skill that adults need!!!
Volunteer work is awesome for getting to know people who can write letters of recommendation, especially if the child is doing work related to a future career.
