Marketing Your High School Senior

November 10, 2009

Cheryl has a senior in homeschool high school with good SAT scores and an Eagle Scout!  How Cool!  But how can she afford college when financing is tight?  The answer is simple.  Marketing.

Dear Cheryl,
It was so nice to talk to you today!  Thanks for calling!  Listen, good SAT scores, and eagle scout, and some college courses taken as a senior – you are sitting pretty!  It’s all about marketing your child at this point.  I recommended these two videos:

Although the videos are best viewed during junior year, I still think it will help – plus you mentioned younger children.  Now, the Finding a College video is on the Gold Care Club website, so if you were to join you could watch that video online and take the “College Scholarships for High School Credit” course that I was telling you about.  Here is the information about the Gold Care Club.

Finally, I wanted to point you to some helpful blog posts about senior year.

I hope I’ll get to talk to you again sometime!

I’m wondering something about this. We learned the hard way during my husband’s job search that real human beings don’t read resumes unless a computer tells them to. Resumes are by and large electronic nowadays. The human types in a keyword, and if you have a *synonym* of that keyword on your resume, you *will* be overlooked even if you’re the most qualified person for that job skill! So now my husband has to re-write his resume in order to make it look good to a *computer.* My question is twofold:

    1) Are colleges going electronic with the application process?

    2) Do the people processing college applications look for certain keywords?

    Joelle,
Most colleges say they look at the “whole student.” I think that’s probably true – even more true AFTER they look at test scores and GPA. Yes, you submit applications electronically to many colleges, but I have heard that ALL student applications are looked at by a real living, breathing person.
I’m sorry about your hubby being out of work!
    Blessings,
    Lee
