Michael Phelps – Superhero!

August 13, 2008

Michael Phelps has ADD – did you know that?  His mother was able to take what could have been a detriment, and turned it into a huge advantage.  I love this article titled “Michael Phelps’ Mom on How to Raise an ADHD Superstar.”  It states that “Behind almost every ADHD success story is a devoted parent (or two).” Read the article from ADDitudemag.com

Did you read about my newsletter article about the boy homeschool graduate with learning disabilities?  He went on to earn ELEVEN graduate degrees!  Here is the article in USA Today.

I encourage you to find the Superhero within your own child!  My husband has written a series of articles about finding the superhero your own homeschooled children.  Read more!

Step One: Observing Passion

Step Two: Catching Fire

Step Three: Providing Opportunity

Enjoy watching the Olympics!

Blessings,

Lee

I’m trying to word this very carefully so I don’t come off as being anti-meds or anti-therapy…

Those who wish to try something before going to the doctor would do well to review Matt Binz’s article. Sometimes problems are present *only* because a parent, a teacher, or a school is missing one of the crucial steps Matt has outlined. If you’ve tried everything, though… get thee to a doctor!

I was a little worried about the “medication issue” when I posted the article, because I didn’t want anyone to think that medication was the answer. Loving parents – THAT is the answer. And that’s what I was trying to express. I tried to find another article about Michael Phelps, but that was the first one that had the parent highlighted, so I used it.
    Thanks for making it clearer!

WOW! I just read Matt’s series, and it is fabulous. It really fits a lot with what my husband and I have been talking about this summer. I’m so glad to have read it because it really is making me think about some key things. Thanks for writing it, Mr. HomeScholar!

There are many children/people with ADHD who have some sort of superpowers. But the sad thing is, most of them are kind of ashamed to show them. There is one great Superhero song which sings about a superhero who is like ADD, who has superpowers, but as lyrics go : You won’t notice him, he’ll pass you by…
