At this time of the year, friends are discussing their curriculum choices for next year. I have been asked by several people what we used during the high school years. Every child is unique, of course, but here is a snapshot of our freshman year:
These are the things I made them do:
- American Literature & Composition (Sonlight 100)
- American History (Sonlight 100)
- Biology with Lab (Apologia)
- Algebra 1 (Jacob’s Algebra)
- Fine Arts 1: American Art (art books and Draw Today)
- Bible: Christian Manhood
These are the things they WANTED to do (by the way, I thought they were crazy to do two foreign languages, but I let them):
- Latin 3 (Latin Road to English Grammar)
- French 2 (Power Glide)
- Music: Piano
- PE 1
And these are the things I couldn’t stop my youngest son from doing. (He asked for the American Government curriculum for Christmas, and we simply couldn’t keep him away from economics, no matter how much it annoyed us):
- American Government 1
- Economics 1

My Twenty Cents Keeps Moving says:
My son is in 8th grade next year so we are getting ready to get ready for high school. We are using Apologia’s 8th grade science to get ready for Biology in 9th grade; he will finish Saxon Algebra 1; he uses Abeka language arts, and we will do Mystery of History 3 which will set us up for American History in 9th grade. (I am strongly considering Notgrass’s American History and Literature.) He is also doing Latina Christiana 2 and Logic, and we will use Answers in Genesis Pilgrim’s Progress curriculum for Bible.

So many people have been talking about Notgrass! I think I’ll have to look at that book at the curriculum fair. It’s become very popular, and I’m eager to see what it looks like.

Must do – I made my shopping list for the WHO convention, and I’m not even going to think about it until the materials arrive on my doorstep!!!
Little Sis – Wants to play drums (I got a set at a garage sale CHEAP). Can’t stop drawing!
Big Sis – wants to do more science experiments. Can’t stop reading. Can’t stop cluttering up her room with unfinished knitting and crocheting projects (most of which she’s designed herself). When school’s in session I make her work for 20 minutes each day on ONE project until it’s done.
