Not Promised Safety

July 18, 2009

We are not always promised a safe place.  We are always promised that God is with us.

John 6:16-21
Jesus Walks on the Water
When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. When they had rowed three or three and a half miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were terrified. But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.” Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.

Jesus is the master over Natural  Law.  Walking on the water, having control over storms, he is in control of nature itself.  In the midst of storms,  the Lord reminds us, “It is I, don’t be afraid.”  How can you not be afraid, though?  There is a storm, for goodness sake!  Seek first His Kingdom – he says, after all, “It is I.”  Once you focus on Christ, then count on him to provide, because he says “Don’t be afraid.”  He doesn’t tell them exactly the gravitational or physical changes that will occur to allow him to walk on water.  Instead, he simply says, “Don’t be afraid.”

Storms occur when you homeschool high school.  There are emotional storms for teenagers and parents, as young adults make unsteady attempts at adulthood.  Storms can occur in physical inability and trauma.  God doesn’t single out those situations and say “Be afraid” to those times.

When you obey Jesus, sometimes you will be put in the middle of a storm.  We are not promised a safe place.  We ARE promised that God is with us. We may face danger and difficulty, and even trouble.  In fact, the disciples themselves were scared out of their wits.

Are you?

When you begin to sink, and your homeschooling is going “down for the count” don’t give in to your fear.  Keep walking!
