“Out of the Box” Scholarships

October 28, 2008

Are you worried about the cost of college?  Consider this; you could find a college that’s FREE!  Look outside the box a bit, and search for a college that is the perfect fit for your student.  Look at this college for example: The University of Alabama.  One their website, they explain that a high GPA and high SAT scores will receive full tuition IF they apply by the deadline.  Here is the link.  Read about the Presidential Scholar program.

An out-of-state first-time freshman student who meets the December 1st scholarship priority deadline*, has a 32-36 ACT or 1400-1600 SAT** score and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will be selected as a Presidential Scholar and will receive the value of out-of-state tuition for four years.

If you are absolutely, positively sure that you can NOT afford college, then think outside the box while you’re looking around.

Don’t be scared – educate yourself, and find a college your family can afford.

Hi Lee, I’m on the SHS list with you and have learned so much from you over the years. I wanted to let you know about a small Bible college in Haviland, Kansas that also offers a unique scholarship. It is offering free tuition if the student lives in the dorm, paying room and board fees. This cost is aroud $8,990 for the YEAR. I thought you might be interested in checking out this opportunity. We are excited for our son to attend there afer he graduates from high school in a few years. Their website is: http://www.barclaycollege.edu/ and the explanation of the tuition scholarship is at this site: http://www.barclaycollege.edu/Finances/tuitionfree.asp

EXCELLENT input Melanie! Thank you so much for adding a college!

I would love to hear other ideas, too! We can all help each other that way!

Of course my dd doesn’t want to go to a big school… but that’s okay. She has received $10K from one school, $18K from another, out-of-state fees waived by a third…. and each of these has scholarship competitions that can generate more scholarships. The first is in November and we should hear in December – will be sure to report back to you Lee

    Thanks, Renee! Keep me updated!

Are you able to compare the cost of public vs. private colleges? Or do you not have all the information yet?

    Blessings,
    Lee

  5. Renee says:

Right now the public ones are cheaper. I think Catholic monks only have so much money to give away. But Madeleine has also been working on outside scholarships.
