Quick Tips for Washington State Homeschoolers

March 15, 2013

Let me give Washington State Homeschoolers two quick tips about social studies.

1. You do NOT have to teach Washington State History
I’ve been getting questions about the 11 Required subjects. “Does my homeschool high schooler have to take the Washington State History that is required by public education?”  No, you do NOT need WA State History.  It is NOT one of the required subjects, so it’s optional for homeschoolers who sign a Declaration of Intent.  You can see the required subjects on the Washington Homeschool Organization website: WA Homeschool Law. The 11 required subjects need to be included in your curriculum, according to RCW 28A.225.010 (4).  But the 11 required subjects are reading, writing, spelling, language, math, science, social studies, history, health, occupational education, and art and music appreciation.  There is no mention of state history.

2.  There is a new essay contest that might be fun for you to do this week.
Washington Coalition for Open Government Essay Contest is open to current juniors and seniors in all Washington public and private high schools, as well as home-schooled students.  You can win $1000 in cash, and the deadline is April 19.  Your student does NOT need to be going to college in order to win.  This contest is by Washington Coalition for Open Government, and I’m not familiar with the organization.  This does look like a great way to think through some issues in American and state government, though. Washington Coalition for Open Government Essay Contest
