Rescue Us!

November 7, 2009

What happened to the “Good Old Days”?  I have been bombarded by the media recently with horrible images, terrible news stories, and corrupt undercurrents on TV.  Feeling frustrated with “media today” I stumble on this verse in my Bible.

Galatians 1:3-4
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,

noah Rescue Us!

In looks like a simple greeting at first, until you look closely at this phrase, “rescue us from the present evil age”.  Wow!  I thought those were the Good Old Days!  I thought those were the days without shock radio and appalling TV programming!  How could THAT be an evil age, when THIS is the present evil age?

Using my historical knowledge (which was ONLY learned by homeschooling my own children, by the way!) I started thinking about some other evil ages.  The Roaring twenties – equally naughty, but without TV to promote it.  Nazi Germany – certainly not less evil than now.  We aren’t alone in history, that’s for sure, and some eras have been even worse.

Perhaps instead of cocooning or hiding our head in the ground, we can continue to “just keep swimming” like they say in Finding Nemo.  Continue to homeschool high school without fear.  Continue to gear up for college, recognizing that this present evil age may be pretty run-of-the-mill as compared to past evil ages.

Have you seen the YouTube about “Everything’s Amazing & Nobody’s Happy“?  The language is a little rough, but it does give a satirical look at how things really aren’t THAT bad.   Just between you and me, I’m pretty sure that our children aren’t the worst generation, either!  But it’s funny, and it serves to illustrate my point.  I love it when he says,  “You’re sitting in the chair – IN THE SKY!”

And remember this about the good old days – that was when we walked two miles to school each day in the snow, and it was uphill both directions!

Thank you, Lee, for this reminder. When evil seems to be prevailing, we do have to remember that God is *still* in control. Though I loathe many of their actions, Greenpeace does have a great slogan — think globally, act locally. So much is out of our control; we need to focus on that which God has given us to do.
