Resources for Homeschooling with ADHD and Dyslexia

Dear Sue,

My mission is helping parents homeschool high school, so I don’t have much special needs information that isn’t “general” in nature.  I can help put your mind at ease in a few areas, however.

First of all, the college admission tests do allow for special needs children to get accommodation for the SAT.  That usually means they will allow more time for the test, but there may be other accommodations as well.  So don’t feel like your student will necessarily score poorly on the test!  With a doctor’s diagnosis, you should be able to get accommodation.  It will take a lot of effort on your part, but it will be worth it.

Second, there are colleges that specialize in dyslexia, and market to students with dyslexia.  You should be able to find a college that is a “perfect fit” for your student, even if your student has difficulty even when they are a senior.  This website might help you:  Dyslexia at College.

Every homeschool parent struggles to do the same thing:  teach their child at their level all the time.  If you can always teach your child at their ability level, they will be more successful than if they “fail” because they are working at grade level before they are ready.

Regardless of the issues different students have, whether they are gifted or special needs, many of the tasks assigned to homeschool parents remain the same.  You may want to look at my “Preparing to Homeschool High School“ DVD, because it will teach you the basics of homeschooling high school.  Whether your child has ADHD or not, you’ll still benefit from learning about college preparation, so that you are prepared for anything!

One of my young friends has dealt with severe dyslexia.  At the age of 19, he was still struggling to spell basic words.  Even spell-check was a challenge, because he wasn’t always even close to the correct spelling.  But at the age of 19, he decided he wanted to pursue college.  He is older now, and is EXTREMELY successful in college!  He was recently admitted to the business school at his university – 300 applicants, and he was one of only 100 students admitted!  Don’t give up hope, there are lots of success stories out there!
