XBox Education?

October 8, 2008

One of my greatest discoveries was using DVDs to teach my children French.  Simply by using the “French” option on Nemo, we were able to review our French vocabulary in an incredibly fun way.  Now I hear that there is ANOTHER great way to study French!  Read this article in my local paper.

When John Nordlinger, senior research manager for Microsoft Research’s gaming efforts, wanted a refresher on his French, he started playing “Everquest” — the multiplayer online role-playing game — in that language.

What a fabulous idea!  That would have been a PERFECT fit for my kids!  I’m planning on telling Alex the idea today, because he is still taking French in college.  He did watch “Nemo” in French to prepare himself for this quarter.  Imagine his delight that he can study with video games!

These are fabulous ideas! We’re working on French now as well (my language from high school so that I can muddle through it!) This will be such a fun way to work on our vocabulary.

There are only three of us, and we’re the same gender. To make up for the variety we’d get with other classmates, we use teddy bears. Even my challenged learner is in on the action – her idea, not mine. It’s truly hilarious to be speaking French in little squeaky voices. We can practice manners (think tea party), invent situations for them, make up family trees, and talk about their traits (color, age, length of fur, size). We laugh our way through each lesson.

Anyone want to start a French club in the Seattle area?

By the way, Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” is FABULOUS in French.

My daughters (11 and 9) have Webkinz, and they sometimes use the Spanish version of the website. I also require my high school age son to watch a favorite movie in Spanish periodically.

I hadn’t thought about having him play Xbox in a foreign language. Thanks for the idea!
