Panic happens. Filled with concerns, I would lay in bed and worry about curriculum choices, scheduling conflicts, record keeping problems, and teenage angst. I’m fairly certain that I’m not alone in my stress about homeschooling high school. I listen to enough parents when I’m consulting or online to know this is still an issue for parents. Is this one of those things about “increasing our pain in childbirth?” Does that pain extend into our child’s young adulthood?
I love this positive affirmation of King David. Now there is a guy that has some troubles in his life! But look at his proclamation.
Psalm 4:8 I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
He says “I WILL” lie down and sleep. Troubles were all around him too. Bigger troubles than even homeschoolers have! And yet he was committed to having a night of sleep. He was counting on the Lord to provide peace and safety while he slept.
I encourage you to make sure you are getting enough sleep. Homeschooling high school is hard enough, but it’s even more difficult with only half a brain! Make sure you get the sleep you need, so that you can function while you do your job: homeschooling. Your homeschool is WORTH getting some sleep. It’s worth putting off the laundry or dishes until the morning. It’s worth setting your concerns aside until tomorrow morning – AFTER the cup of coffee! The decisions you make will be clearer in the morning.
Have you taken my free mini-course on high school? It’s called “The 5 Biggest Mistakes Parents Make When Homeschooling High School.” The title is meant to bring anxious parents to the course and then teach them how to RELAX, by the way. When you sign up for the “Biggest Mistakes” course, I will ask you what your biggest question is about homeschooling high school. I remember one parent simply wrote, “Will everything be OK?” I could just FEEL the anxiety and concern – those feelings of being overwhelmed.
Sleep in peace. The Lord will make you dwell in safety. You’re children will turn out OK.
Do you know what I hear most from parents who have graduated their children? Shock! Shock that it really DOES turn out OK! Shock that the homeschool transcripts work, kids go successfully off to college, college becomes affordable with scholarships, and shock that their children grow up to be wonderful people. Hang on! Sleep in peace! Everything WILL be OK!

Our February newsletter comes out at midnight (Pacific time). I know you are eager to read it but I would really encourage you NOT to stay up late to open it! Get some sleep. It will be waiting for you in the morning!
Night-night!

What a great reminder, Lee! I will have to memorize this scripture and remind myself that it’s ok to go to bed when my mind and list is full of things to do & needs to accomplish. I needed to hear this tonight!

Andrea

I even go so far as to scale back the school workload during that one week of the month when I’m particularly irritable…

Maybe I should just confess right now that I have a *huge* sleep need, and my kids tease me about it all the time!

Dear Lee, Thanks for your reminder! Standardized testing has really helped me relax about homeschooling. Before I started testing I never knew if our kids were even up to average. Now according to the tests I know they are above average and rising. I enjoy getting through the curriculum as best we can, doing necessary work but also following rabbit trails that interest the kids. Sure it is hard work but it is immensely satisfying too. Thanks so much for your encouragement!
