A
Non-Obsessive-Compulsive Guide to College Planning
By Matt Binz
In our consulting, Lee and I have encountered two schools of thought
about senior year planning. First is the "Laissez-faire"
method - parents who take a hands-off approach to college
planning. The teen is responsible for every aspect of the
college application experience, from initial college search to the
final result.
Such parents will often only weigh-in when it comes to the final
selection. Not surprisingly, their "concern index" increases
dramatically when the conversation gets around to college
costs. "You have GOT to be kidding!"
is a typical refrain.
While I'm a strong proponent of natural consequences and allowing teens
to take increased responsibility for college plans as they mature, I
have to say that "detached
indifference" on the part of the parent typically does not result in a
positive outcome. There are three reasons for
this.

indifference" doesn't work here

Allow Coed Dorm Rooms
Don't be so laid back with
your choice of college that this happens to your child. "Erik Youngdahl
and Michelle Garcia share a dorm room at Connecticut's Wesleyan
University. But they say there's no funny business going on. Really.
They mean it." Read the FoxNews
article

Parens"
One
family's adventures in gender-neutral housing
"If sharing a bedroom with a
student of the opposite sex is not your idea of appropriate college
housing for your son or daughter, beware. The college or university to
which you have just sent a deposit may have other ideas."
Read the National
Review article
Substance
Free Dorms
Princeton Review ranks colleges for drug, alcohol, and cigarette
usage. Dorms room are more like "low fat" than "fat free" and
you need
to read the statistics carefully. On recent college visits,
one mother reported that marijuana was being
sold openly in front of a college cafeteria. Please visit the
colleges for

Review article
Now that I have your Attention!
Don't be fearful about college, just be pro-active. They aren't all bad
- we LOVE the university our children attend. While "laissez-faire"
parenting can cause a problem, you can take control of the college
admission process, and proceed with caution, and not be paralyzed with
fear. Always visit colleges! One mother saw a
"condom tree" on every dorm floor. You want to know these
things before making a college choice. Learn what it takes to
succeed at the college game with my two videos.

Have You Made
Your Transcript?
If you have a high school
student, make sure to work on your transcript for this past year!
When I made our homeschool transcript, I quickly found out that all the
books and authorities disagreed with each other.
Being the "Pollyanna" that I am, I decided to frame that in the
positive; there are many "right ways" to make a homeschool
transcript. If you would like help making your transcript,
using a book that recognizes that your way of homeschooling is right
for your family, then grab my ebook on transcripts. "The Easy Truth About
Homeschool Transcripts" comes with everything you need to get
the job done quickly.
- Start with the "Making a
Transcript" course, free with the e-book
- Read "The Easy Truth About
Homeschool Transcripts"
- Use one of the 10 transcript
templates provided free with the e-book
And because the book gives you a free month of the Gold Care Club, you
can get even more support through the transcript process!
- Ask me any questions during
your weekly 20 minute consultation!
- Email me your transcript to
get feedback.
- Read sample course
descriptions included in your membership.
The book even comes with my "High School Testing" audio course, so
you'll be even better prepared for next year.
" You could read six different
books and end up with seven different opinions on how to do a
transcript! Each book would have an entirely different approach to
grades, credits, record keeping, co-op classes, format and just about
every other aspect of creating a transcript.
This one ebook contains all of that information available in one
convenient place, at your fingertips! In this book, you will gain
BREAKTHROUGH INSIGHTS that will revolutionize your thinking about
homeschool transcripts. Instead of listening to someone tell you which
hoops you have to jump through, become confident on how to homeschool
in the way that YOU know is best."

feel more confident.

I hope that helps. I get
stuck when confronted with a creative project, so if you're like me,
